1. Know your travel coverage

The best trips are uneventful – at least when it comes to injuries or illness. What if you do have a health hiccup away from home? As an Allina Health | Aetna plan member, you’re covered for emergency or urgent care services outside of your plan area. Log in to your secure member website at AllinaHealthAetnaMedicare.com/Login to learn more about your travel coverage.

2. Use the find a provider tool

Need to see a health care professional while away from home? This online tool can help you find an in-network provider anywhere in the United States. To start your search, go to AllinaHealthAetnaMedicare.com/FindProvider and enter your ZIP code.

3. Fill out your caregiver forms

If you’re traveling with a caregiver, make sure to bring your completed caregiver form. This form gives your caregiver the right to help you with health care decisions and speak with us on your behalf if needed. Click here and scroll down to the caregiver section to find and print out the form.

4. Make use of your over-the-counter (OTC) allowance

As an Allina Health | Aetna member, you get an OTC benefit amount (allowance) to help pay for certain health and wellness products. Use it to buy OTC items you need while you travel. For instance, pain relievers, allergy medicine or sunscreen.

7 tips for healthy, happy travels

Use these tips to help you stay safe and healthy on the go.

  1. Apply sunscreen. The sun can be very strong, especially during the summer. Make sure to apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Reapply every two hours, or more often if you’re swimming or sweating.
  2. Stay out of the sun. Try to stay in the shade when you can, especially during the hottest part of the day. This is usually between 10 AM and 4 PM. If you’re outside, find a spot under a tree or umbrella to stay shaded and cool.
  3. Pack a first aid kit. Include essential items like bandages, antiseptic wipes and pain relievers. This can help you handle minor injuries and discomforts while you’re away from home.
  4. Stay hydrated. Giving your body enough water is very important in the summer heat. Proper hydration regulates your body temperature, boosts energy levels and even improves brain function.
  5. Prep nutritious snacks. If you are out in the sun for a long time, packing smart, healthy snacks can help you save money and stay energized. Try to pack non-perishable snacks like nuts, granola bars or crackers.
  6. Get up to date on vaccines. Traveling to new regions can expose you to new diseases. Getting vaccinated can help boost your immunity against them. Ask your provider if you need any vaccines.
  7. Wash your hands regularly. It’s easy to pick up germs in busy places from surfaces like airplane seats, elevator buttons and doorknobs. Washing your hands regularly can help prevent you from getting common illnesses like colds and flu that can take all the fun out of your trip.

Following these tips and understanding your plan benefits and resources lets you enjoy your trip without worrying about your well-being. Safe travels!
